5 Do’s of Doing Leading

It occurred to me how far I’ve gone being a leader, almost 5 years since I started MyBump Media— you can call it a life’s degree. I won’t count the first year, most of it was me busy being busy. Where we are now, half of it for sure is because of my cofounder and partner in life. I’ll get into that next time.

But honestly I’ve never been one; my closest experience was being selected for BADAR; a high school Islamic groupie. Anyway, I got fired for not being orderly Islamic but we won’t get into that.

The few changes in me arise because of few unique occasions:

  1. People are human

Machines don’t have feelings, you can overwork them. Efficiency is always the aim but everyone is efficient at being humans too. So l learned to brush a lot of things off, chaos gets no where. Second chances are real and you should give yourself some too. This occurred to me mostly because of an ex-collogue suicide, there was a lot of things I could handle differently but I know I did my best nonetheless. It made me realize — life’s fragile

Let people grow into their best versions. Where you can, get processes automated. Tech’s awesome and has limitless applications. What man can make, man can amend!

2. There are things you can’t control and that’s OK

The most important thing is doing better next time. It’s a race, but only with yourself. I stole that line from the Sunscreen Song by Baz Luhrmann — it’s a good one. You can plan ahead or prefer spontaneous, it’s always goes to a 50–50 percent chance, consider yourself lucky for each second things don’t fuck up. Anticipate 3 occasions that could happen and you’ll probably do OK.

3. Be nice

It’s hard to do but it goes a long way. When life has not been nice to you, it’s tougher. I wouldn’t have been able to lead without the help of some really awesome people — you know who you are, thanks for the kindness. I’ll try to return them and pass it on.

Be nice, to others and your self, it’s the easiest and fastest way to get through life.

4. Make space for spontaneousness

I started MyBump Media sheerly spontaneous and I found a way where I could make money by helping people make money without working— it’s a charity by itself so I can absolve myself from other shit I do, and it feels great. Rigidness is good but take that to a 1:2 scale and I found most of time it brings out the best in situations and people.

5. You are as good as your collective team

Again, 50–50 chance but I always believe in underdogs, we always have the best potential but there’s only so much hand holding you can get. Invest time in good talent or buy one. In either case, maintaining team compatibility is key. Let people be people, which brings me to my fist point.

6. Be firm

Set a goal; there are many ways to get there — plan for it and be open for other plans but never change the goal. My goal for MyBump Media is to have as many people get paid for doing nothing, it’s still a work in progress.
