5 Ways on Getting Team Culture Straight

I remembered that time when I just want to work with friends I choose to be with, rather than looking over my cubicle and eye that babe that works like a machine; and feel like a puppet, or that dude that assumes I’m sticking around the job because I feel like ‘getting some’?

Yeah, I wanted to do things with the people that I want to work with. Over the years, I learned:

  1. As long as you pay them well, they’ll stay

I get this, you need to pay the bills. I would too.

2. As long as you give them the road they want grow into, they’ll stay

This is a bit tricky because not all team members have the same goal. Some stay around because of work intensiveness, some because of flexibility, some because they just need the time out-of-home. But usually the common reason is money — see №1

3. As long as you drive innovation, they’ll stay

Done is better than perfect. Nothing is perfect so keep hustling. It’s a viscous cycle. For some, they get an adrenaline rush of learning new updates, better ways of doing anything — those are the ones you want to keep having around you.

4. As long as you provide a fun and relaxed working environment, they’ll stay

Fun is very subjective so let’s start with flexible work time. Compared to a fixed 8am-5pm job, you can do your work when ever you want to, as long as you deliver on time. Covid-19 has totally driven this full steam ahead. It’s a culture that is going to stay, even after Covid is over because flexible working hours just makes sense — there is no longer work life balance, only work life integration.

As for fun, if they don’t drink or smoke, give them experience — company trips work for both.

5. As long as no other company can provide much better, they’ll stay

Some times people just need a fresh start and better pay is a plus — see №1.

I’ve worked and still working with awesome people and they’ve taught me a lot on why should I be a leader, a friend and a better person. Thanks guys. Most of the time I know the why, still working on how.
